Behind Puff Daddy's production Mary J. Blige recorded the 2 best R&B albums of the 90's with What's the 411 and My Life, and gained the title "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul." I gave props to Kelis for singing on a ton of hooks, but Mary J. was the real Queen of lending her vocal talents to the best Hip Hop tracks of the 90's. Beyonce might think she's running shit right now, but Mary recorded with almost every great rapper when she started.... Biggie, Meth, Jay-Z (when he was the REAL Jay-Z). Her voice is so good, when Method Man released "You're All I need" as a single they decided to re-record it to include Mary J. on the track. The song would later receive a Grammy. Her voice is flawed, raspy and aggressive, but her flaws allow her to separate herself from the boring octave hogging divas like Mariah and Whitney. She just has a presence that no other singer can pull off. After almost 20 years Mary is still on top of the world, and though her new albums might not be the same groundbreaking Hip-Hop and R&B mash ups from the 90s, her voice and Mary J. grit are still top notch.
